Every class will have whole class photos as well as individual photos.

If you have multiple children at HES and would like a sibling photo, please collect a form from the office and return it by tomorrow morning.

PhotoLife will send out codes next term to your emails. You will then be able to look at the photos and choose which package you would like to purchase.

Attendance is linked to both student well-being and success.  At Hamilton East School we aim for regular attendance which is 90% or above.  If your tamariki has had irregular attendance this term they will come home with an attendance report on Wednesday the 10th of April. 

Regular school attendance makes a big difference.  Every day counts, and we know that missing too many days leads to lower achievement, and poorer well-being and can affect social skills.  We would like to support you in any way needed to improve your child’s attendance.

Can you believe that we are at the end of the first term of school.

As part of our Turangawaewae unit our Kōwhai team went on a trip today to Fairfield College and were welcomed onto the Aratiatia Marae.  It was an exciting morning starting with the bus trip.  A first for some of our tamariki (children).

We were part of a pōwhiri which is a traditional welcome at a Marae where there was karanga (a call on to the marae), whaikorero (welcoming speeches) and waiata (songs).  We then were given some kai (food) and inu (water) and then there was a Kapa Haka performance.

After that, we split into two groups and we each had a turn singing waiata and then going into the hear the stories about the marae and all of its wonderful carvings.  It was a very special place and we appreciated being able to go and experience it.

We have had a short couple of weeks as we lead into the end of the term but the mahi has continued. Tōtara classes have been building on their trip to Kukutāruhe Gully by doing various statistics and science activities as well as some great art displays.

After seeing Matua Taki’s pet tuna we have been learning about tuna and their lifecycle. Knowing that they only breed once after swimming all the way to Tonga has made us appreciate them even more. All classes have been learning about the legend of Tuna and Hiriwa which tells the story of how the tuna got its silver belly - if you’re not sure about this story, just ask your child.
We had St Johns visit to teach the children about calling 111 in case of an emergency and some helpful tips around helping injured people. It was a good reminder for the children to know the names of their whānau members who live with them as well as their address.

Kia Ora whānau,

This week we were lucky enough to be invited to Marian School’s production - Seussical. The show was filled with colour, singing and some amazing performances from their Year 6-8 students. Below are some pictures of the Kauri team in their hall waiting for the show to begin. 

Early next term our Manu Rere (student leadership) group will be announced. Students who are interested have filled in an application form and will be presented with their Manu Rere badge at a hui whakahirahira next term. One of the questions on the application form was a leader they admire and why. It was lovely to see so many of our tamariki (students) write their mum or dad. 

Last week Emily took a group of Kauri students to a Touch tournament. Thank you to Emily for organising this and providing this opportunity for our tamariki, and thanks to the parents who also supported. It was great chatting to students on Friday afternoon and hearing all their stories and their enjoyment was evident. I know our Ham East tamariki played with sportsmanship. 

I can’t believe we are a few days away from finishing our first term of 2024!! It has been a long 11 week term and our Kauri team has worked hard. I hope you all have a safe and happy 2 week break and look forward to your return in term 2.

Congratulations to Ella Reid who won the “Decorate the Easter Egg” competition run by MADE.  Ella won a year of hot chocolates and art lessons at Ranger Studio located in MADE.
