Kia ora whānau.We have had a great start for Tōtara kapa haka with Whaea Penny this term. It has been especially exciting having Kauri students join us to model and perform some of their favourite haka and waiata-a-ringa. Thank you to Elijah and Reign who have been instrumental in modelling and leading some of our boys for haka. Kia kaha.

Room 16 have been sharing some new Maths games. They are a fun way to support your child’s learning at home. This is our favourite.
Gnarly Numbers
Tools:
- Deck of playing cards

- Whiteboard and markers
- Paper and pencils
The goal of the game is to be the player who finishes nearest to a designated target number (the 'gnarly number') at the end of the round. The first player to win five rounds wins the overall game. Before beginning the game, sort the playing cards and remove all picture cards and tens from the deck. (As a variant on the game, Jacks could be left in the deck to represent the number zero)
Two players - for example: nearest to the” gnarly number” targeting 100. Player 1, begins by turning over five cards: 2, 3, 7, 4 ,5. Player 2 chooses 2 cards and makes the number 74; one card to place into the tens column of the gameboard and one card to place into the ones column.
Player 1 makes number 53 from the remaining three cards. The cards are reshuffled. Then Player 2 turns over five more cards 5, 4, 6, 3, 2. Player 1 chooses 2 cards and makes 56. Player 2 selects 2 more cards and makes 34 from the remaining cards. Both players now add their numbers together to work out their total. Whichever player gets the nearest total to 100 wins.
Player 1: 53 + 56 = 109 Player 2: 74 + 34 = 108 - nearest to target number 100 wins.
