Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori" Welcome to Matariki the start of the Māori New Year.
Kōwhai tamariki have been celebrating Matariki in many different ways. They have learned that Matariki is about sharing time with whānau (family) me ngā hoa (friends), enjoy kai, sing waiata, play games, fly kites, raranga and sharing stories about Matariki.
Tōtara Team
Mānawatia a Matariki - Happy Māori New Year!
Kia Ora e te whānau,
This term our Tōtara Inquiry unit has focussed on ‘Making a Mark’. We have been learning about the design process of creating or modifying a new or existing piece of technology to solve or help an environmental issue. This has also incorporated our recent celebrations for ‘Tane Mahuta Week’ where we have been learning about how our actions impact the environment.
Akomanga 17 has been exploring how we can make the world a better place through our choice of transport; reducing, recycling, and reusing. We have created a Kaitiaki Care Code and actioned our learning by turning off lights and devices when not needed, creating more compost for our gardens, and planting native trees. Our Tōtara Enviro tamariki also participated in the Arbour Day planting at Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park.
A special mihi to Ange and the other adults that supported our tamariki in creating Toi Wow designs that were showcased at our Hui Whakahirahira.
Kauri Team
Mānawatia a Matariki - Happy Māori New Year!
Manu tukutuku are kites that are used to send messages to the heavens, something that is special to the celebration of Matariki. Ruma tekau ma tahi has spent some time creating their own manu tukutuku, experimenting with designing materials and problem solving!
Here we are on Te Wehenga seeing if they will fly!
Ruma tekau ma tahi also worked through a House of Science box called ‘Moo To You’. This was focused on mammals, cows and different types of mixtures. The tamariki had an amazing time creating their own pasture, experimenting with mixtures and solutions and observing the difference between monogastric and ruminant digestive systems.
The Famous Mud Run
On a wet, cold winter morning, 25 tough kids went to Ngāruawahia to run 3 km up and down hills in the mud and rain. We had to go under a net, slide down hills, under a fence, through tunnels and down a water slide - if we wished to - and go through a ton of mud. We had a totally awesome day!
Making a Mark
Room 9 has been working hard to make a positive mark on our environment. We are creating bee houses, bird houses and feeders, butterfly gardens and learning what to plant to feed and nourish our garden creatures. Take a look at the pictures!
We hope everyone in the Kauri Team, students, teachers and Learning Assistants have a relaxed and well deserved holiday. We look forward to seeing all our tamariki back ready for Operetta preparations in Term 3.

Taumata Pippins currently has space to take more girls aged 5-7keen to join in on the fun that GirlGuiding NZ has to offer.
We offer a non-competitive learning environment which is open-minded and values-based. It’s a supportive place to grow confident, adventurous girls who are ready to be tomorrow’s leaders. We offer a programme where the girls themselves have a say in the activities they get to participate in and offer experiences like camps, crafts and real life experiences rewarding them with badges as they learn new skills.
