Hamilton East School

Engaged, Respectful, Literate, Curious, Connected

Kia ora koutou,

My name is Philippa Wright and at Hamilton East School I am called Pippa. I was born in Waipipi (the youngest child of four) where my father was the school principal! We moved to Hamilton and I started school at Fifth Avenue which is now called Te Ara Rima. I then attended Knighton Road, Peachgrove Intermediate and Hamilton Girls' High school. I studied at Hamilton Teachers' College and Waikato University before teaching in Te Kuiti, New Plymouth and Feilding. I then returned to  Massey University where I completed a Bachelor of Education majoring in Special Education. I also have a Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Wintec. I taught in Palmerston North for  five years before my husband and I explored the world for two years. We returned to New Zealand to have the first of our two daughters. I have taught in a number of  Hamilton schools and worked as a therapist at the McKenzie Centre. I live very close to Hamilton East School and my first involvement was as a parent and PTA member. I won a Senior teacher position in 1995 teaching new entrants. I have held various positions here since then, including Acting Principal for 2007.
I am proud of the Hamilton East learning  community as an example of' 'Learning to Live Together', our overarching Toolkit vision. I value building relationships with staff, children and their families and recognise that it is a privilege to work with them. I believe positive relationships contribute to an empathetic and inclusive school culture.
My experience has given me insight into the need for a balance between supporting colleagues and families and also challenging them to improve in order to achieve better learning outcomes for children.
My life experiences have contributed to me valuing education, our dual cultural heritage, our increasingly multi-cultural heritage, sustainability and above all safe and happy children. These values align with the Hamilton East School philosophy.
Please come and visit our beautiful, historical, enviro-school. We will show you the learners at work and you can decide if this is the right place for your child.
